Ocean tidal cooling effect on summer sea fog over the Okhotsk Sea

چکیده
Ocean tide is a periodic phenomenon of the rise and fall of the sea level that depends on the bathymetry and positions of the moon and sun relative to the earth. In the Okhotsk Sea, the ocean tide causes strong vertical mixing in the upper ocean, generating rich structures in summer SST with extraordinarily cold patches on Kashevarov Bank, along the Kuril Islands, northeast of the Terpeniya Peninsula, and inside Shelikhov Bay. The present study analyzes and synthesizes a suite of ship-board and satellite observations, and numerical simulations to investigate the ocean tidal cooling effect on summer sea fog over the Okhotsk Sea. Over the tide-induced cold patches, atmospheric stability increases, and surface wind weakens markedly possibly through suppressed atmospheric vertical mixing. Our analysis of ship-board observations reveals frequent sea-fog occurrence over the cold patches with a maximum exceeding 70% along the Kuril Islands in July-August. Numerical simulations with the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model support that the cold patches cool air temperature, decelerates surface wind, and forms a strong surface inversion layer up to 0.5 km high, creating favorable conditions for sea fog occurrence. The WRF simulation without the tidal cooling effect reduces sea fog occurrence by more than 20% over cold patches, illustrating the importance of SST products for climate models.

Energy characteristics of tidal and residual level variations in the Okhotsk Sea from satellite altimetry data
A unified satellite altimetry database, TOPEX/Poseidon (1993–2002) and Jason-1 (2002–2007) containing about 7,000 locations, was created for the Okhotsk Sea and adjacent areas. Amplitudes and phases of main tidal consituents were calculated for each location, and maps of tidal character and height were constructed. It is shown that diurnal waves dominate in the amphidromic areas of semidiurnal ...

This study provides insight into changes in sea ice conditions and the oceanographic environment over the past 500 kyr through analysis of the diatom record. Based on the relative abundance of 13 diatoms species in piston core MD012414, four types of environmental conditions in the central Okhotsk Sea over the last 330 ka BP have been distinguished: (1) open-ocean alternating with seasonal sea-...

A modeling study of summer ocean circulation on the inner shelf south of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, has been conducted. The influences of winds, air–sea heat fluxes, tides, and shelfwide circulation are all incorporated. The model reproduces recognized features of the regional summer circulation: warm temperatures and weak eastward flow in Nantucket Sound, cool tidally mixed waters and an associa...

The magnitude and geographical distribution of the error in the Archiving, Validation and Interpretation of Satellite Oceanographic data (AVISO) altimetry data associated with tidal correction around Asian marginal seas has been revealed. The errors were evaluated by harmonic analysis of the AVISO corrected sea surface heights data (CorSSH). Errors of more than 15 cm of tidal correction were re...
متن کاملTides in the Sea of Okhotsk
Eight major tidal constituents in the Sea of Okhotsk have been investigated using a numerical solution of tidal equations on a 59 space grid. The tides are dominated by the diurnal constituents. Diurnal tidal currents are enhanced in Shelikhov Bay and Penzhinskaya Guba, at Kashevarov Bank, in proximity to the Kuril Islands and at a few smaller locations. The major energy sink for diurnal tides ...
